PrimeTech highlights the critical role of integrated design, innovation and collaboration in building sustainable, future-ready urban centres

Industry leaders, urban planners, architects, engineers and technology innovators gathered at PrimeTech Day 2026 to explore how visionary leadership, resilient infrastructure and human-centred design can help create the cities that future generations will depend on.

The one-day event, organised by PrimeTech Design and Engineering, the design and engineering subsidiary of Julius Berger Nigeria PLC, brought together key stakeholders from across Nigeria’s built environment sector under the theme, Designing for the Future: Leadership, Resilience and the Cities We Need.

The forum provided a platform for robust discussions on how technology, innovation and collaborative leadership can drive the development of sustainable, inclusive and adaptable urban environments capable of meeting emerging social, economic and environmental challenges.

Speaking at the event, PrimeTech General Manager, Engr. Christian Moessmer, underscored the importance of integrating architecture and engineering from the earliest stages of project development.

We are the first link in the chain that runs from design through construction to operation, he said, noting that the firm’s integrated approach offers clients a seamless, one-stop solution with a unified vision and direction.

According to Moessmer, while design may represent the smallest portion of a project’s lifecycle, its influence extends throughout the entire process.

“The design phase changes everything that follows,” he said, explaining that early collaboration among professionals significantly reduces costly adjustments during project execution.

He further stressed that resilience must become a central consideration in modern urban development.

“We must treat resilience as an investment, not an extra. It protects assets, safeguards communities and ultimately strengthens our cities,” he said.

Calling for greater collaboration in shaping the future of Nigeria’s urban centres, particularly Lagos, Moessmer urged stakeholders to turn dialogue into action.

“The city we need will not be designed in one evening, but it can begin with conversations like this and the partnerships that follow. Our door in Lagos is open. Let’s design the Lagos we need,” he said.

Earlier in his welcome remarks, PrimeTech Lagos Manager, Joseph Abba, highlighted the broader value of good design beyond aesthetics.

“Good design is not only about how a building or infrastructure looks. It is about how effectively it functions, how much it costs to operate and the long-term value it delivers throughout its lifecycle,” he said.

Referencing the challenges associated with Lagos’ rapid population growth, Abba noted that the city’s expanding demand for housing, transportation, healthcare, education, energy and water infrastructure requires solutions that can stand the test of time.

With a population estimated at over 22 million people, he said, Lagos faces increasing pressure from flooding, extreme heat, traffic congestion and infrastructure deficits, making resilience an imperative rather than an option.

Encouraging participants to reflect on their daily experience of navigating the city, Abba challenged stakeholders to ask whether today’s investments would remain effective and valuable decades into the future.

He also highlighted PrimeTech’s evolution and growing capabilities, noting that since 2012 the company has delivered engineering solutions for both public and private sector clients nationwide. Today, the firm boasts a multidisciplinary workforce of more than 67 engineers operating from its Abuja headquarters and Lagos office.

According to him, PrimeTech’s operations span structural, mechanical, electrical, piping and infrastructure engineering, supported by an ISO-certified quality management system that ensures consistency, accountability and continuous improvement.

Contributors to the event, including keynote speaker Brig. Gen. Tunde Reis (rtd), Dr. Folayinka Dania of the Lagos State Resilience Office, Arc. Dr. Ramatu Aliyu, Partner at PrimeTech Architecture LLP, Engr. Jafaru Damulak, Chairman of the PrimeTech Board, and Engr. Moessmer, agreed that the pace of urbanisation across Lagos and the wider African continent demands a fundamentally new approach to city development.

Speakers emphasised that future cities must be designed to withstand environmental, economic and social shocks while continuing to meet the changing needs of residents.

A recurring theme throughout the discussions was the pivotal role of leadership in driving sustainable urban transformation. Panellists argued that beyond infrastructure and technology, effective leadership is essential for creating the policies, partnerships and investment frameworks required for long-term growth and resilience.

The event also examined how smart technologies, data-driven planning and innovative construction methodologies are reshaping the urban landscape. Participants noted that integrating digital solutions into transportation, housing, healthcare and public services can improve efficiency, enhance quality of life and strengthen community resilience.

Stakeholders further advocated for increased investment in climate-resilient infrastructure, inclusive public spaces and social systems designed to promote accessibility, equity and community well-being.

The consensus was clear: resilience can no longer be regarded as an optional feature of urban development but must become a foundational principle of city planning. Whether through climate adaptation strategies, smart mobility solutions or innovative design practices, cities must be equipped to anticipate tomorrow’s challenges while meeting today’s needs.

PrimeTech Day 2026 concluded with a shared commitment among participants to deepen collaboration, accelerate innovation and strengthen leadership capacity in pursuit of more sustainable, prosperous and resilient cities across Nigeria and beyond.
